The Talpe Rehabilitation & Development Trust

Following the disastrous tsunami in Sri Lanka, the Galle area and especially the villages of Talpe, Habaraduwa and Unawattuna are devastated.

There have been thousands of deaths, as well as thousands of other people displaced due to the destruction of their simple homes.

How YOU Can Help

"If you really want to help Sri Lanka, then come back" …..is the message all Sri Lankans are sending out to the western world. We too support this, as tourism is key to that rebuilding process.

A healthy tourist industry will provide jobs and in turn the dignity that will put the world-famous smile back on Sri Lankan faces. Please do not forget Sri Lanka.

If you once thought of this Pearl drop in the Indian Ocean as a possible holiday destination, please think of it again.

The tsunami sadly damaged some of the popular coastal areas, but by end of March, 2006, the coastal areas will be cleared again and you will once more be able to enjoy our golden beaches. Paradise is not lost. More on how you can help ››

What is a Tsunami?

A tsunami (pronounced tsoo-nah-mee) is a wave train, or series of waves, generated in a body of water by an impulsive disturbance that vertically displaces the water column.

Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, explosions, and even the impact of cosmic bodies, such as meteorites, can generate tsunamis.

Tsunamis can savagely attack coastlines, causing devastating property damage and loss of life. Tsunamis can occur at any time, day or night; they can move faster than a person can run, and the danger from a tsunami can last for several hours after the arrival of the first wave.
